THE GLASS ROOM

Performance-installation for a shop

In continuation with a strategy deployed in Photographs of a dance rehearsal, this performance-installation plays with the revelation and hiding of the work itself.

An empty shop, overlooking a street in the city of Winchester.

Part 1: COMING SOON

For a week the words COMING SOON are written on the wall of the shop, with only a microphone on a stand as a promise of something to come soon.

Part 2: INTERVAL

A lone performer dances to music in the brightly lit room; whenever a passerby stops to watch the show, the light and music go off. The performer sits at the back wall under the word INTERVAL, and waits. When the spectator leaves, the show resumes.

Part 3: THE END

The room is dark. Whenever a passerby walks past, the lights come on, and 5 performers begin jumping on the spot together, tracking the spectator with their gaze. As long as the spectator stays to watch their efforts, the 5 performers keep jumping on the spot. When the spectator leaves, the room returns to darkness; the performers rest in the shadows.
