DANCE COMPANY
A choreography for 10 people
This work openly displays the process of how a dance performance comes about, from its initial rehearsal stages to its final execution. Each time Dance company is presented, a cast of 10 local performers is found through internet and local call-outs. Their task is to watch a series of online instruction videos and to rehearse alone, at home, in front of their computer screens. The cast finally assemble on the day before the show, for a single rehearsal; the next day, they present their efforts to a live audience. The choreography consists of simple warm ups, stretches, theatre games and dance exercises; they take off shoes and socks, they lie on the floor and practice breathing, they stand in a line and project their voices, and they attempt a unison dance with their eyes closed.
Dance company blurs the line between rehearsal and performance, engaging audience members not through exceptional skill or virtuoso dance, but rather through a slow unfolding of ordinary actions executed by ordinary performers.
